Logging While Drilling

Logging While Drilling (LWD) is a technology that enables the acquisition of geological and petrophysical data while drilling the well or immediately after. Unlike conventional wireline logging tools, LWD tools are integrated into the drill string, allowing the actual measurement of key formation parameters such as resistivity, porosity, sonic velocity and gamma rays.

Operation and Features

LWD tools use a system to store and transmit data via Measurement White Drilling (MWD). However, they often feature more solid-state memory capacity to store higher resolution logs. This capacity allows for detailed analysis once the tool is removed from the hole, complementing data transmitted in real time to the surface via mud pulses or electromagnetic waves.

Advantages of LWD

Measurement against deep fluid invasion: Since measurements are made during or immediately after drilling, formation information is obtained with minimal impact from drilling fluid invasion, which improves the accuracy of the logs.

Application in highly deviated and complex wells: In situations where wells have high deviations or conditions that make it difficult to use conventional wireline tools, LWD ensures the capture of critical subsurface data.

Optimization in well positioning (Geosteering): Real-time data obtained by LWD allows the well trajectory to be adjusted to stay within the zone of interest or the most productive section of the reservoir. This is particularly important in horizontal wells or in complex reservoirs.
