Measurement While Drilling
(PP-MWD & EM-MWD)
Complementary technologies that provide vital data on both the trajectory of the well and the geological characteristics of the drilled terrain.
Measurement While Drilling
Measurement While Drilling (MWD) is an essential technology in well drilling, as it allows for real-time data on wellbore conditions while drilling is in progress. This system focuses on measuring critical properties such as pressure, temperature and wellbore trajectory, which are essential to optimise operation control and ensure wellbore stability.
How MWD Works
During drilling, sensors located downhole collect and store information on the physical properties of the environment. This data is recorded in a solid-state memory and then transmitted to the surface using different telemetry methods. The most common transmission systems include:
-
Mud Pulse Telemetry: Data is encoded in pressure pulses in the drilling fluid, using amplitude or frequency modulation.
-
Electromagnetic Waves (EM Telemetry): Information is transmitted through electromagnetic signals, which can pass through the fluid and the walls of the wellbore to reach the surface.
In both cases, the encoded signal is decoded at the surface to provide real-time data on the trajectory and other wellbore conditions. In addition, the same telemetry system allows commands to be sent from the surface to adjust drilling parameters as needed.
Advantages of High-Speed MWD
The use of high-speed MWD tools allows for continuous and accurate assessment while drilling, which offers several advantages:
-
Cost Reduction: Although MWD tools represent a considerable investment, their use is justified by the reduction in drilling time and the reduced need for additional tools to obtain information about the wellbore.
-
Improved Wellbore Stability: Real-time data helps make immediate decisions to maintain wellbore stability and safety, minimizing risks.
-
Trajectory Optimization: Constant monitoring of trajectories allows for accurate corrections and minimizing deviations, which is crucial in directional drilling.
In summary, high-speed MWD systems combine efficient data acquisition and transmission, improving both safety and efficiency in drilling operations.
